Composite "White" Fillings

What are composite “white” fillings?

Composite white fillings are mercury free (unlike Amalgam silver fillings), which are made from tooth colored plastic mixed with tiny resin particles. They are used for repairing and restoring small cavities as well as for cosmetic treatments. They are called “white” fillings because of their natural looking tooth color.

How does it work?

First, the dentist at Karing Dental Center will numb the area where the cavity is being restored. The decay will be removed and a hole will be left in its place that needs to be filled. Without filling the tooth, the tooth can’t function normally. The tooth is then prepared by applying a mild acid solution. Next, the white composite filling is placed in layers inside the hole, and with a special light, each layer is hardened instantly. When enough composite is placed on your tooth to fill in the hole, the dentist will shape your tooth using a special dental tool. The tooth is finally polished to prevent any staining.

What are the advantages of white fillings?

There are several advantages of having white fillings. Here are some reasons why they are preferred:

  • The composite filling joins together with the tooth, unlike silver fillings, which weaken the tooth.
  • Composite filling can easily flow into smaller places, so your dentist can make smaller holes in the tooth.
  • Because smaller holes can be made, more of your own tooth will stay intact, leaving it much stronger.
  • Decay that recurs is easier to spot under white fillings than silver ones.
  • Composite fillings are easily fixed.
  • They are resistant to extreme hot or cold temperatures.
  • Safe for you—no worries about mercury allergies or toxic mercury entering your body.
  • Allows your dentist to fix smaller cavities; you don’t have to wait until they get bigger.
  • Natural and more attractive than metal fillings
  • White fillings can last anywhere from 7-10 years.

  • How can I care for my teeth after restoration?

Right after restoration, you might feel some discomfort or tenderness, but this is normal. You can take ibuprofen to reduce the symptoms. Also, you should regularly brush and floss your teeth everyday to main a good oral health. When brushing, use a soft toothbrush or an electronic toothbrush twice a day because it’s much more gentle on your teeth. You should floss at least once a day, usually before bedtime is the best time to do so. When deciding what toothpaste to use, go with something that is non-abrasive like regular Crest or Colgate. Avoid using “extra whitening” or “whitening” toothpaste because these are usually abrasive and can scratch your restored tooth’s surface. If you enjoy drinking tea, coffee, or soda, drink it through a straw to avoid staining. Finally, switch your mouthwash or mouth rinse to alcohol-free because alcohol can soften the composite material and shorten the length of how long a restoration should last.
